Melkor's Letters: How Sauron joined Morgoth
It was my greatest joy to see you, Sauron, desiring to become one of my own in the Isle of Almaren.
V.Y. 3450
Sauron my newly inducted pupil, Gorthaur, Hello!
I am very pleased that you are willing to see my efforts, as we are just about to end the Spring of Arda. I saw through your powers and how skilled you were at crafting and making, which is how our Enemy made you out to be. Much like Aulë and Tulkas, you, Mairon the Maia, were a craftsman. You were deemed a high and mighty smith just right after your Master himself! You were most known for your love of order and planning, which was your virtue when you served under Aulë. That is indeed a high honor! Meanwhile, I do see you in the Isle of Almaren (the Valar’s dwelling place) as one of my spies…
It seems you wanted to know how I was able to look after myself, instead of looking after a deity such as our Enemy. You have been caged under the influence of one of the servants of our Enemy, Aulë. You were fair and wise, and skilled in crafting and making, much like he was. However, the Valar have betrayed me as they decided, as a group, to do what’s good for our Enemy, all the things we loathe the most. In the beginning of the Spring of Arda in V.Y. 1900, I fled into the Void, where I used to go time and time again to look for the Flame Imperishable. This is our Enemy’s power of creation, which brings back some of the worst memories, as he didn’t like my music, and I didn’t like his, which is why now, I am no longer considered one of the Valar as I initially was made.
Meanwhile, Arda became filled with green trees and lands, birds, beasts, and all signs of life. Our goal is to destroy all of that! Even better is to destroy the Spring of Arda itself. Unfortunately, the Valar raised the Two Lamps, and due to the blending of the light of the two lamps, Illuin and Ormal, they were able to make their first abode, resting after their many labors. Oh, how I loathe this so much! We loathe when the members of the Valar are at rest, after filling the lands with such greenery. It’s amazing how the stress of crafting the Two Lamps, and later making a feast and celebrating the wedding of their friends Tulkas and Nessa really wears them down.
When they began the Two Lamps, I was lurking in the Walls of Night. It was my greatest joy to see you, Sauron, desiring to become one of my own in the Isle of Almaren. From the school of Aulë the Vala, we know about your crafting skills, but the difference between the school of Aulë and the school of Melkor (myself) is that under Aulë, you would be merely a small creature, never mind the fact that there are strong Maiar. Your voice would simply remain small, as you work day in and day out under Aulë, as he performs his chief crafts and you are stuck following his ideas until the end of Arda.
See, this is why I left the Valar and went against them. As one of the Valar, I had to follow the directions of our Enemy, Eru. It was the bane of my existence, as I didn’t get to craft my own ideas. I had to listen to their music and follow what it was told by Eru. Now, I have been freed from that and am now able to follow my own wishes and pretend that I am building my own view of the world alongside Eru’s (when I’m really building it in contrary to Eru).
I am delighted to share this with you! We are just about to end what the Valar love the most – the Spring of Arda. We would start by destroying the Two Lamps, Illuin and Ormal, which were wrought by Aulë at the request of his spouse, Yavanna. Just watch me – after destroying the Lamps, as I would end the Spring of Arda which would change our world at our own will contrary to our Enemy’s. Together, we will rule Arda until the end of its days.
Your master,
Melkor
